Networking: 4 reasons to keep your meetings offline

There is no substitute for a face-to-face meeting with a professional in your chosen field. From confidence building to landing the potential deal of your life, here’s why you need to embrace in-person networking:

1. You’ll break out of your comfort zone

Within the financial trading game, confidence is key. People often dread networking because they fear judgment, rejection, and the possibility of making a mistake. However, these negative emotions are an inevitable part of a career as a successful trader, and learning how to overcome these negative perceptions early will go a long way towards finding success within the field.

A networking event is the perfect opportunity to face these fears in a relatively low stakes environment, where the losses are low but the possible returns are high, and attending an event can be the moment of realisation that allows a you to overcome your worry and reach new heights of success.

2. You’ll build your analytical and decision-making skills

As a trader your ability to respond quickly to changing markets will largely determine your success, and this is a skill that can be honed through the process of networking. Every person you meet represents a potential new opportunity, and, as in trading, you will need to think on your feet to respond quickly. You’ll be able to make new connections, build your confidence, and practice the skills of a successful trader all in one event, and this is an opportunity you will rarely online.

3. You’ll be in the midst of the action

It can be tempting to hide behind the virtual safety blanket of our online persona, whether this is Linkedin, Twitter, or a Facebook community. However, all too frequently I see people discussing topics online, interacting momentarily with peers, and then logging off. Our virtual social networks are brilliant tools at our disposal, but they should be seen as a stepping stone towards a face-to-face meeting.

The real deals do not happen online; they are made over coffees, lunches and shared interests - as I quickly learnt during my years as a property investor- and for anyone wishing to really succeed in their industry, meeting face-to-face is essential.

4. You’ll create a network for success

Having a supportive, like-minded team of professionals available to ask questions, challenge perceptions, and mine for experience is an invaluable tool within any sector, and along with building your knowledge, personal connections with fellow professionals will also provide you with emotional understanding through the inevitable highs and lows that come with a career in trading.
